Dentistry study lasts 6 years in Iran, which is divided into two courses of basic sciences (2 years) and specialized courses with internships (4 years). Students in the first two years study biochemistry, theoretical physiology, scientific physiology, anatomy, medicine and dentistry statistics and research methods, public health, histology, human genetics, microbiology and immunology, and after these two years, if they pass the basic sciences exam, they will start the next course.

In the specialized part (4 years) some courses are taught including maxillofacial pathology, orthodontics, endodontics, fixed and occlusive prostheses, removable dentures, periodontology, restorative and dental materials, oral and maxillofacial surgeries. Also, in this course of dentistry (4-year specialized course) students start internship to become familiar with oral diseases and under the supervision of professors. At the end of this course, students can diagnose and treat oral diseases as a general dentist.
