Studying Doctor of Medicine takes long 6 to 7 years in Iran including 4 periods: 1) Basic sciences, 2) Physiopathology, 3) Clinical Training, and 4) Clinical Internship.
1) Basic sciences: this period takes long two and a half years and includes both of practical and theoretical courses in basic sciences, and also specialized and general courses. After finishing these courses, students participate in an exam and if they succeed in the exam, they go to the next period.
2) Physiopathology: this period includes 31 courses in two semesters. In this period, there are some courses in the principals of physiology and provide information about mechanisms of diseases and factors influence them, symptoms of diseases and analytical diagnosis of diseases
3) Clinical Training: this period includes 97 courses in 30 months. The goal of this period is diagnosing diseases clinically and using tests, obtaining required capabilities in thinking, independency, and quick conclusion for correct communication with patients and planning prevention and treatment operation
4) Clinical Internship: this period includes 67 courses in 18 months. The goal of this period is developing skills and reinforcing decision making and increasing self-confidence and completing thought by direct confrontation of interns with health and treatment issues and accepting responsibilities.
